Read RSS or ATOM Feeds Without Authentication
Posted by Siddharth Agarwal on Tuesday, December 02, 2008
RSS feeds are everywhere. They serve all kinds of content from news updates to stock prices, from blog updates to link directories. Although most of the feeds are free to distribute and served through unencrypted channel, there are a few that are encrypted. For instance, threads on an invitation-only forum might be provided through an encrypted feed which can only be viewed after logging in. What would you do if you wanted to read such a feed in your favorite feed reader?
FreeMyFeed is a free web-based service that frees your encrypted feeds from user authentication or used an invalid SSL certificate. This service is very simple and straightforward to use. Just type in the feed address, your username and password and FreeMyFeed will do the rest. A very long URL is generated and the original encrypted feed can now be accessed through this URL without the need of any authentication. After this, you can choose to either use a service like TinyURL to shorten this URL to something you can remember or directly add it to your favorite feed reader.
One thing that must be kept in mind that if you do not intend to share the contents of the feed with others, make sure you keep the unencrypted feed URL to yourself. In case the URL is no more a secret and is known to other people, all you need to do is change the password of the original encrypted feed and free it again. If anyone tries to access the old URL, he will get a wrong password error.
