Highly Customized Social Messaging from Mobile Phone and Web

Posted by Siddharth Agarwal on Saturday, June 09, 2007

In recent times, social messaging has achieved new frontiers. Services like Twitter allow you to send and receive messages on your mobile phones apart from the web and instant messages. This intimate association with several channels of communication may prove to be one of the important steps towards integrating the means of communication closely. New services that combine web 2.0 features such as comments and web feed integration can turn out to be even more useful.

Jaiku, a new social messaging tool, lets you send and receive messages from your friends on your mobile phone or the web. Jaiku, unlike other social messaging tools, has some very useful web 2.0 features. To use Jaiku, you must register with it for free. You can also register your mobile phone with your account to post and receive messages on the fly. After registration, you will get a Jaiku page http://your-name.jaiku.com, where you can post messages. You can also read other Jaiku pages by people from around the globe apart from posting messages. Jaiku also offers a mobile application, only for Nokia S60 phones, with which you can access the service and share your availability, location and calendar.

Jaiku has a few unique features which make it different from other similar social messaging tools. One of them is its 'Comments' feature which lets the readers post their comments on your Jaiku pages. One does not have to be your 'friend' to post comments. Another benefit of using Jaiku is the 'Channel' feature. This feature facilitates the posting of messages from more than one person on the same Jaiku stream. This is similar to the concept of co-authors where more than one author contributes to the Jaiku page.

Another notable feature is 'Feed aggregation'. Jaiku allows you to integrate web feeds into your Jaiku account. All the entries and updates in the feeds are automatically reflected on your Jaiku page. This feature can be used to receive messages from your friends who do not use Jaiku. For instance, you can integrate the feed of your friend's tumblelog (or any other service) into your Jaiku page. Whenever your friend posts a message on his tumblelog, you will receive it on your mobile from your Jaiku page.
