Twitter - IM via Mobiles and Web
Posted by Siddharth Agarwal on Monday, April 02, 2007
Internet has been evolving continuously to provide us a better, faster and more efficient communication channel than the previous one. Efforts on unification of different channels like email, IM, etc on the web have been made earlier and some of them have already been successful like GTalk. Now, innovative thinkers have already started to make efforts to combine non-web elements especially mobile phones with the internet communication channels. With the release of iPhone just around the corner, this is sure to turn into a success story.
Twitter, is a free service that lets you send/receive messages in real-time to/from a group of friends living anywhere in the world via IM, mobile or the web. To use this service, you have to register for free and ask your friends to 'follow you' to receive updates on their preferred channel of communication. When you send a tweet (a Twitter message) to your Twitter page, your friends will receive updates in real time.
To use Twitter with your IM client, add twitter@twitter.com to your contacts. Post verification, your Twitter buddy will become live and you can send/receive updates via IM client. For mobiles, you need to register your mobile and send a verification message to a number specified by Twitter. Now you will be able to receive updates from your buddies on your mobile for free but keep in mind that sending messages with mobile could be a pricey issue depending upon your mobile contract for international SMS from non-US countries.
You can begin 'following someone' by sending a message 'follow username' to the Twitter buddy where username is the username of your friend. All the messages can be viewed on the Twitter page online by logging into your Twitter account.
